WI-FI IN THE LIBRARY – AND NEW IT SYSTEMS – ARE COMING SOON!

UPPER NORWOOD joint library could have new IT systems – and the introduction of  Wi-Fi – within the next three months.

News of the possible switching on again of the computers – with new IT and Wi-Fi making the IT infrastructure more resilient for when the library trust takes over – follows what has been described as a “very productive” meeting at the library on Wednesday evening.

Robbie Gibson, who co-chairs the interim Upper Norwood library trust, said in a statement following the meeting: “An update on the details of the transfer of the running of the library and the building from Croydon to Lambeth revealed that it is hoped the final legal agreements will be signed by the end of August. “Then the meeting set out a road map of process of how the library would be transferred from Lambeth council as caretaker manager to an independent trust by July 2014.

“A series of targets are to be jointly agreed. “The importance of a close working relationship between the staff and the trust was stressed, as also was inclusivity and community input into the future of the library. “Lambeth is committing officer resource, and cabinet level representation to help achieve agreed goals.”

In attendance were Lambeth cabinet member for culture – Sally Prentice, Lambeth Gipsy Hill ward councillors Jennifer Brathwaite and Matthew Bennett; Lambeth officers – John Kerridge, Donna Wiggins and Susanna Barnes, the library staff and members of the Upper Norwood Library Trust

“The Gipsy Hill ward councillors also expressed their firm support for the library and their keenness to be involved in the evolution. “Progress is being made on Wi-Fi and new IT infrastructure but is potentially subject to a delay in installation of up to three months due to installation backlogs from BT and Virgin in terms of cable provision.

“The investment in new IT is critical and will provide greater resilience going forward under the trust. “All who attended appreciated the candour and positive spirit which was evinced by all in attendance.  “The trust would particularly like to thank the staff for all their hard work during a particularly challenging period”.

A similar meeting is to be scheduled for September.
