WAR MEMORIAL OUTSIDE ST JOHN’S CHURCH ‘LISTED’
The war memorial outside St John’s church on Auckland Road has been ‘listed’ as part of Historic England’s First World War Commemoration project.
The memorial takes the form of a gabled Calvary on a pillar set on a pedestal. It commemorates local servicemen who died during the First World War.
The War Memorial at St John the Evangelist Church, Upper Norwood was recommended for listing at Grade II for:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifices they made in the First World War;
* Architectural interest: as a dignified war memorial in the form of a gabled Calvary cross;
* Group value: with the grade II* listed St John the Evangelist Church.
Further reading: IN REMEMBRANCE September 13, 2012 on this website lists all the names on the memorial, including further details of some of those who died.
Memorials which are / were in other churches, those in Rockmount school and Upper Norwood sorting office and others whose names do not appear on any local memorial are also listed.
