31 WEEKS TO GO TO NEXT YEAR’S COUNCIL ELECTIONS Defend The Ten‏ @defendtheten  Tweeted: “31 wks to go in our election countdown & we meet Brenda. “She is 88 & had used @CarnegieLib since 1967. “She misses it very, very much! “In 1999 Brenda helped found @FrndsofCarnegie when the council planned to redevelop the site. “18 years on & she’s still defending the library.”

WHAT NEXT FOR DURNING AND TATE LAMBETH SOUTH LIBRARIES?

UPDATE: “WE’VE NOT BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE MINET FOR OVER A YEAR” SAY GREENWICH LEISURE

Greenwich Leisure appear to have backed out of plans to use the Minet library in Knatchbull Road SE5 for one of their unwanted gyms.

A report to next Monday’s Lambeth council cabinet meeting on the future of the borough archives, currently based at the Minet, states:  “2.45 Following a number of discussions, the provision of a Healthy Living Centre is not being pursued at this time. “

And that’s it. No indication of WHY.

There were proposals for a third gym – in addition to the unwanted gym in the basement of the Carnegie library, Herne Hill – in either the Durning library or the Tate South Lambeth library. Whether either –or both – of these now get put back on the drawing board remains to be seen.

The report adds: “As part of the next stage of works this report recommends that the council works with the community to help shape the thinking for the future of the Minet site.

“2.46 Pending further discussions on the future of the site and the development of detailed plans for the relocation of the archives, the existing Archive Service will continue to be delivered from Minet.

“2.47 It is proposed, that while the Archives remains at 52 Knatchbull Road, the library opens as a selfservice facility with trained library staff support for a minimum of two hours a day from the Hubs Library team. The library will occupy half the footprint of the original library.

“The remaining half of the original library footprint will be occupied by the Home Visit Library, whose staff, alongside the Archives staff, will be able to monitor use of the library, when the Hubs Library team are not present.

“2.48 The library would be open for the same hours as the Archives: Monday 1pm-8pm, Tuesday 10am- 6pm, Wednesday closed, Thursday 10am-6pm, Friday 10am-1pm, Saturday 9am-5pm. Activities delivered would include a weekly Under 5s group and a monthly Reading Group, as well as other library activities, such as the Summer Reading Scheme or digital support. This service, if agreed, would commence from November 2017.”

And where were the Home Visit Library service was based before? In the basement of the Carnegie library, Herne Hill which closed on March 31st last year.

UPDATE Monday October 2nd

News From Crystal Palace has sent the following questions to Cllr Sonia Winifred, the cabinet member whose responsibilities include libraries:

“Greenwich Leisure appear to have backed out of plans to use the Minet library in Knatchbull Road SE5 for one of their unwanted gyms.

A report to Monday’s Lambeth council cabinet meeting on the future of the borough archives, currently based at the Minet, states:  ‘2.45 Following a number of discussions, the provision of a Healthy Living Centre is not being pursued at this time. ‘

Please could you say why?. And what does this mean – if anything –  for Durning library and Tate South Lambeth library?”

News From Crystal Palace have also written to Mark Sesnan, Greenwich Leisure’s .boss, and its press office with a similarly-worded request:

Greenwich Leisure appear to have backed out of plans to use the Minet library in Knatchbull Road SE5 for one of their unwanted gyms.

A report to tomorrow’s Lambeth council cabinet meeting on the future of the borough archives, currently based at the Minet, states:  “2.45 Following a number of discussions, the provision of a Healthy Living Centre is not being pursued at this time. “

Please could you say why?. And do Greenwich Leisure have any plans for Durning library and Tate South Lambeth library?

Our email was posted yesterday (Sunday). This morning Greenwich Leisure came back with this reply:

“GLL has not been involved with Minet for over a year, so therefore any queries would need to go through Lambeth council.”

So why hasn’t any Lambeth Labour councillor bothered to say ANYTHING? Do Lambeth Labour councillors just like to keep annoying people for the sake of it by not giving people updates on what’s not happening at the Minet or (see below) ignoring continued criticism that the cost of ‘Their New Town Hall’ has gone up from £50 million to £104 million?

LAMBETH PEOPLE’S AUDIT – JUST SOME OF THE ISSUES THAT HAVE STILL NOT BEEN ADDRESSED (BUT NEWS FROM CRYSTAL PALACE HAS THE ANSWER TO ONE OF THEM)

ONE of the answers to the above questions came up at Lambeth council’s corporate committee last night (Thursday).

Conservative opposition leader Cllr Tim Briggs queried a comment in a report that the new town hall was “being managed to budget.” Nisar Visram, assistant director, corporate finance said the £50 million construction cost was from 2012. It did not include other costs such as freehold purchases of adjoining sites, moving etc.

“I’m not sure in what context the figures were given out” he said.

NOTE: It was actually nice to attend last night’s corporate committee meeting. Questions were politely put, questions were politely answered by officers without any evasion or prevarication. Unlike most other Lambeth council / cabinet and committee meetings which News From Crystal Palace attend and are more reminiscent of a bear garden.

But if an officer can answer a question about the difference in costs on ‘Their New Town Hall’ why on earth haven’t any Labour councillors answered it?.
