Trees in the back garden of the Carnegie library, Herne Hill were felled this morning. One library campaigner told News From Crystal Palace: “Just been over. “Devastating.
“The trees are all gone. “I walked right in and took a small section of a trunk. “I spoke to the Forcia guy who I think knows what an awful task he’s been charged with overseeing.
“Our beautiful reading garden, our special library – it’s so mindless.”
21 weeks until the Council elections, and this is Sue. A lifelong book-lover, who says @CarnegieLib “supplied me with years of wonderful reading & gave me a sense of a life in common with my neighbours & other readers”
“…I found great books, got online help & made friends through the library”. She worries “about the younger generations. I think about all those toddlers that used to turn up, singing away surrounded by books. Library visits are indeed special at all ages”
Sadly, Sue’s life-partner died unexpectedly some years ago, and Sue now spends a lot of time looking after her elderly Mum: “I wasn’t expecting life to be like this but the library was always there to buoy me up…”
Defend the Ten tweeted: “Sue is referring to previous Labour attempts in 1999 to close a number of Lambeth’s libraries, including @CarnegieLib, which contributed to Labour losing control of the council in the following election.
“Her final question is particularly powerful: ‘Why is such an amazing thing in our cultural heritage, a comprehensive library service, being lost?’,.”
Friends of Carnegie have added the following Tweet:
Sue also played a big role in creating and maintaining the reading and wildlife garden @CarnegieLib, now being destroyed, to be taken over by gym exhaust machinery and garish gym check-in pavilion. From peaceful haven to noisy, ugly wasteland, excluding those to whom it gave wellbeing.

They’re making unwarranted interventions in bldg & garden proposed by Cllr & Officer, 2 squeeze space & compomise G2 listing & ACV status. When gym + “community hub” fail, they’ll sell 4 conv into luxury flats as planned since 1999.

GLL have probably got that covered. Lambeth are in effect gifting them the building and then trying to palm off the rump that is the library on a community group. The trouble is it won’t work which is why plan is failing.

If @MayorOfLondon @SadiqKhan does decide to bung London Borough of Culture to his mates and backers in Lambeth, could he please explain how the award fulfils this promise in his culture plan: “Work with boroughs to promote and protect London’s libraries”? http://www.
