LAMBETHWATCH TWITTER….ON THE PEOPLE’S AUDIT LAMBETH MEETING, LAMBETH NOT BECOMING LONDON BOROUGH OF CULTURE, CARNEGIE LIBRARY – AND SILENCE OF THE LAMBETHS……

Defend The Ten Retweeted Kate Hoey‏  @KateHoeyMP on the meeting organised by Peoples Audit

A meeting full of people who just want to be listened to and respected by the Council. Some excellent points made and credit to @PeoplesAudit for all their work and persistence in the face of hostility and lies about their motives.Pleased to chair the meeting.

.@lambeth_council have failed in their bid to become London’s Borough of Culture. We wonder if @cllrpeck thinks the £47k, 30k of which was paid to external contractors, was worth it?

Defend The Ten Retweeted James Jarvis‏ @studiojarvis Just been to the reopened @CarnegieLib.

A 5pm there were 2 security guards and 2 @GLL_UK staff sitting around with nothing to do. There was a queue to use the phone to speak to the v. helpful librarian.

Quote from Lambeth Director of Finance’s statement in last para: ‘To date sound financial management and planning have insulated the authority from…’ Comments on a postcard please @PeoplesAudit @KeaneMJ

West Norwood library and Nettlefold Halls closed for 7 years, Carnegie closed for 22 months, Minet closed for over a year, Waterloo moved into a church, shrunken Carnegie temporary and due to close by 12 Feb 2019 – you call that defending? How much have you saved with these cuts?

Defend The Ten Retweeted David Edwards‏ @_drwe Replying to @MalcolmClark77 @LambethLabour

Glad @CarnegieLib open at last, but greatly diminished and without making the intended savings: instead, a freebie for GLL. Is that success?

Helen‏ @jhgm50 Retweeted Malcolm Clark

You have spent far more than saved & some of your near staff-less ‘libraries’ are in tiny spaces. At the great @PeoplesAudit meeting tonight again and again residents asked Lambeth council to stop spin such as yours.

Helen added, Malcolm Clark @MalcolmClark77

10 libraries in Lambeth. 10 open libraries in Lambeth. Many of them in new or renovated buildings (or shortly moving into one). Lambeth Labour Council have successfully defended the ten in face of Tory cuts.

Defend The Ten Retweeted Nicola Baldwin‏ @NicoBalders Retweeted Malcolm Clark

You privatised #Carnegie, gave contractors free rein to wreck building & replace trained librarians with zero-hours security staff. @lambeth_council defends nothing, except itself.

During several years of its closure West Norwood library was “protected by occupation”. Perhaps that is what @cllrpeck means. When copper roof tiles were stolen from the library, Lambeth refused to provide a security guard or repair the roof. This is from LBL minutes in 2012.pic.twitter.com/qmAoMDAds0

They’ve saved nothing because they’ve been paying hundreds of thousands of pounds on security for the libraries just to keep them closed. If only they valued our public libraries as highly as they value senior management salaries at the council.

Aran Lewis‏ @aranmlewis 22h22 hours ago Replying to @jwsal @cllrpeck @defendtheten

Indeed, and profoundly hypocritical when Lambeth Labour have been persistent purveyors of misinformation about their library cuts. They claim it is to save money due to austerity, but refuse to say how much revenue spending they have saved on libraries in this administration.

The councillors of @LambethLabour always have time to insult and defame their critics, but when it comes to answering questions they are strangely mute. Why, @LambethLabour? If you have trashed Carnegie to save money, how much has actually been saved?

@defendtheten @lambeth_council @hernehillforum @FrndsofCarnegie 9.15am I’m told no public toilet access after being made to wait 15 mins in cold for late security. GLL staff no idea of book location. 3 non librarian staff. Cold. This is what hollowing out of public services is.

Lambeth Green Party 23 February in response to our opinion column ‘Silence of the Lambeths’:

There’s not much of a local press left – and democracy is weaker and more fragile for it. This tale of Lambeth’s attempts to exclude a local reporter from a full council meeting should send shivers down all our spines.

And on a far, far more sobering note:
