People’s Audit Lambeth founder Simon Morrow finds it somewhat amusing that Lambeth Labour are labelling him as a Green party activist.
“I have never been a member of a political party” Simon, a chartered quantity surveyor, tells News From Crystal Palace.
“I sent an open letter to Cllr Imogen Walker (See tweet: https://twitter.com/PeoplesAudit/status/887972805110882304 Open letter: ‘Lambeth council’s lack of response to the ‘extensive financial mismanagement’ highlighted in our report is deeply concerning.) offering to provide evidence to an independent third party that the People’s Audit was not set up by a political party.
“The initial press statement suggested that it was set up predominantly by the Liberal Democrats – they then changed their tune and decided it was a Green front.
“Cllr Walker never responded to this or apologised. “They don’t want to see the facts as this would mean that they would have to stop smearing us and deal with the issues.”
Cllr Walker’s statement (issued around July 2017) read as follows:
“The budget analysis by the self-proclaimed People’s Audit has proved to be deeply flawed, and none of its claims have been upheld by an extensive and independent audit. “The People’s Audit is a collection of senior politicians from the Liberal Democrats and the Greens; and while it is right that our budget is open to scrutiny by our political opponents, senior politicians should be more transparent about their motives and agendas. “Local people do not like attempts by the Lib Dems and Greens to pull the wool over their eyes and they will not be fooled by this.
“It is disappointing that Liberal Democrat politicians have decided to present themselves behind a façade in this way, though in some ways it is understandable that they are reluctant to be more open about their identities. “After all, when they ran the council, council tax went up 40 per cent in just four years and 500 children were left without a local school place – but creating front organisations is dishonest.
“The main pressure on Lambeth’s budget has come from year on year austerity cuts, most of which occurred when the Liberal Democrats were in Government.” Cllr Imogen Walker, Deputy Leader (Finance)
News From Crystal Palace understands that Labour canvassers in the area of Carnegie library, Herne Hill are being asked by residents where they come from. Answers include Tooting and Wimbledon.
“I assume these questions were prompted by the canvassers appearing to be unaware of local issues” a source tells News From Crystal Palace.
