LAMBETHWATCH DIARY: LIBRARY – OR THE HERNE HILL LIFESTYLE CENTRE? AS CAMPAIGNERS ASK WHY SPEND £650,000 ON CARNEGIE NOW? (and why information accuracy is not Lambeth’s strong point)

CARNEGIE LIBRARY

Carnegie Herne Hill found itself back in the national newspapers with a photograph of the library accompanying an editorial headlined: “The Guardian view on small-town Britain” which begins:
The world in 2019: The vexed politics of our times has obscured the view ahead. Over the holidays we are examining some big issues on the horizon. Today we look at the politics of place Fri 28 Dec 2018 16.29 GMT

And it’s since been photographed at least twice:

What shallow, trite, mealy-mouthed nonsense is this ? Even P4 bus knows is a Library.

No flyposting allowed – at least that’s what we were told

“Lifestyle Centre “???

Hugh Barnard (ex Pharaoh)‏ @hughbarnard Jan 13

Yes, my immediate reaction too. But I hate ‘leisure centre’ with its undertone of passive consumption also. Reminded of the Banksy quote/mural ‘The lifestyle you have ordered is currently out of stock’

Given the £millions wasted on this I would have thought they could have come up with a better sign. Think I’ll continue to go to the much better value and far less controversial @BrockwellLido

….AND HERE’S THE SECOND:

TWO BY-ELECTIONS IN THORNTON WARD

The resignation of Jane Edbrooke as a Lambeth councilor and the impending resignation of Cllr Lib Peck means that people in Thornton ward will be going to the polls TWICE  within a matter of weeks. If the resignations of both councillors were known about why didn’t the Labour party delay calling the first by-election?

The first by-election takes place on February 7th in the safest Labour ward in Lambeth. Have the names of the two people who moved the writ for the by-election been redacted from the relevant documents? We don’t know – yet. Watch this space.

LAMBETH COUNCIL BUDGET

So funding for @SaveCressingham and @savecentralhill has run out already. Money no object for #Lambeth when it comes to their pet projects.

Laura Swaffield‏ @lswaffield1 Retweeted Peoples Audit

THIS IS INSANE! Obscene sum of £650k would have run a proper library WITH STAFF for 4 or 5 years. £3.5m already wasted on stupid gym nobody wants and building/garden wrecked. Council whines everything is the fault of govt cuts -THIS IS NOT. HEADS SHOULD ROLL.

Is this for the gym opening in, er, summer 2017? Income from which was going to cover the costs of the library service? Lambeth Labour as competent, frugal, and efficient as always.

Information accuracy is not Lambeth’s strong point. I note that only 8 public libraries now qualify to appear in the report. Was that an estimate as well? Whatever happened to Labour’s promise: “There are 10 libraries now and there will be 10 libraries in the future.”
