CARRY ON EATING! FOOD MARKET OPEN TOMORROW….

Saturday 14 March

Veg, fruit, bread, cheese, meat, fish, cakes, pastries, eggs, juice, preserves, vegan cheese, smokery, charcuterie, store cupboard refills (nuts, grains, seeds, freshly ground coffee, teas, spices & more), cleaning & washing refills, eco store, original images, framing service, lunch, coffee and more.

We believe that farmers’ markets are a much lower risk places to shop than your average supermarket.   You see, supermarkets are open for long hours each day and have hundreds, or sometimes thousands, of people passing through their enclosed spaces for longish periods of time, a kind of ‘cruise ship’ of retail. And then, of course, everyone’s pushing a trolley, which they touch with both hands, for a long time, before you start pushing it.  Farmers’ markets, on the other hand, take place for just 5 hours, in open spaces, in the fresh air, with a far smaller number of people passing through, and much of the produce comes straight from the farms, not through numerous intermediaries.   There are less surfaces and shelves for people to touch, and everyone brings their own bags (I hope you do, by now) and all the stalls are removed and taken away every week, leaving behind a clean site.   Hand hygiene is also part of the training required to run a stall.  You can, however, help minimise any risks by using contactless payment cards and by washing your hands before you come to the market, and by keeping your distance when at the market.  Many of our stallholders depend on you for their livings, so please keep coming.

And now onto much more important things.

  • Norwood and Brixton Foodbank are looking for all the help they can get – details here.

Wine

Natural wines – Wine Scouts   Pedro always has a great taster open on the stall of one of his organic or biodynamic naturally produced wines.  He’s a true expert, so ask him anything you can think of about wine.  Pedro says, “Hi there! This Saturday we will taste a beautiful organic wine from Catalonia in Spain, the Celler Comunica Vi del Mas Montsant. This Rhone-styled blend is a mid-weight red with Garnacha on the nose and palate – think fresh crunchy red berries- and a finish with the expansion and rustic spice of Syrah. It has a tight-knit structure that needs to open up for a bit – as usual with our wines-. Cotes du Rhone aficionados will love this. Come taste!”
