BROMLEY joins the Nation in mourning at the sad loss of Her Majesty, The Queen

Following the sad news and the official announcement by Buckingham Palace earlier today concerning Her Majesty, The Queen, the Council’s flag is being flown at half-mast.

A one-minute memorial silence was held today, at the Civic Centre, at 10am Friday 9 September 2022.  The Mayor of Bromley, Cllr Hannah Gray and the Leader of the Council, Cllr Colin Smith were present to represent the Council and residents.  Residents and staff joined in this memorial silence at the Civic Centre as a mark of sympathy and respect.

The Mayor of Bromley said, “It is with deep sadness that we are gathering following the official announcement.  “Few of us will know a time in our life when Her Majesty has not been our Sovereign.  “Many of us will have our own personal memories, including when the Queen visited our borough, which we remember with fondness.  “It is right to come together as we mourn at this time, with our flag flown at half-mast out of respect.”

Cllr Smith said, “As our Monarch, The Queen has been an amazing role model for us all, dedicating her life to public service and we owe her a debt of humble gratitude.  “Whilst we mourn for someone who has been ever present in our lives, our thoughts and prayers are naturally with all the members of the Royal Family at this time as they mourn someone who was very dear to them and indeed us all.”

Messages of Condolence can be passed onto members of the Royal family by visiting the Royal website.

Books of Condolence are available at the Civic Centre and at the following library locations during opening hours:

  • Civic Centre, Committee Room
  • Biggin Hill Memorial Library
  • Central Library, Bromley
  • Orpington Library
  • Beckenham Library

The council are reflecting on whether any further civic meetings need to be rearranged in light of this sad news and any changes or updates will be publicised on the Council’s website in due course. (Source: Bromley.gov home website)

“She will be deeply missed by so many people. “Many of us remember her visits to Croydon throughout the years, from the opening of Croydon College in 1960 and The Queen’s Gardens in 1983, to her last visit to Addington Palace and The BRIT School during her Golden Jubilee Tour in 2002.

“I will be writing to send official condolences to the Royal Family on behalf of Croydon. “We will be joining the nation in 11 days of mourning and as a mark of respect, we have lowered the flags outside Croydon Town Hall to half-mast. A Book of Condolences will be opened in the Town Hall.”

“We will always be grateful for Her Majesty’s seven decades of dedicated service to our country, both in peacetime and war. “Her strength and unswerving sense of duty has been a true inspiration, even in the toughest of times.

“She has been much-respected and much-loved as a head of state throughout the world, including here in Croydon. “Earlier this year communities across our borough united to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, and the celebrations were testament to the sense of pride and togetherness she has inspired. “I know we will all be reflecting on special memories of Her Majesty today.” (Source: Croydon.gov newsroom)

LEWISHAM Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

A statement from the Mayor of Lewisham.

I am saddened to hear the news from Buckingham Palace this evening, announcing the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

Her Majesty sacrificed much for our country and served with unwavering dedication and that will not be forgotten.

Earlier this year Lewisham residents came together to celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, with community events and street parties held across the borough. In the true spirit of Her Majesty, these parties, concerts and picnics brought people from different communities, backgrounds and ages together for a very special weekend of celebrations. Lots of local people also took part in the formal celebrations in central London. These are special memories that will be cherished.

I know that many people will have their own personal memories which they will reflect on, and the Council will be opening books of condolence for those who wish to pay their respects locally. These will be available from tomorrow afternoon (Friday) at The Civic Suite, Catford; Downham Library; and the Deptford Lounge.

The flag at the Civic Suite is being flown at half-mast as a mark of respect and our thoughts and sympathies are with the Royal Family at this sad and difficult time.

SOUTHWARK Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died

8 September 2022

Today, people across the country and beyond mourn the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Southwark, as a central London borough, has had the great privilege of hosting the Queen and the Royal Family on a number of occasions, not least for her Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977, and again in 2013 to Southwark Cathedral to view the Jubilee Window, then on to the Shard. She will be sadly missed by many in the borough and today both the Mayor and Leaders of Southwark send messages of condolence to her family.

A book of condolence will be available in the atrium of Southwark Council’s offices at 160 Tooley Street for anyone wishing to pay their respects in that way.

Councillor Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “This is a very sad day for our country and for the Royal Family, who are very much in Southwark’s thoughts and prayers. “It was a huge honour for our borough when Her Majesty the Queen visited the Shard in 2013; a short but welcome stop on what has been an incredible seventy-year long service to public life and to our country. “I would like to extend our borough’s deepest condolences to the royal family at this difficult time.”

Councillor Michael Situ, Deputy Mayor of Southwark, said: “For so many of us The Queen has been the Head of State for our entire lives, she has always represented a sense of duty and fortitude in so many challenges the country has faced, which many of us respect and regard highly. “She will be sadly missed by so many, but not least her family – children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, to whom I send my sincere condolences on behalf of all in Southwark.” (Source: Southwark.gov News)
