Croydon council by-elections announced (others pending in Lambeth and Bromley)

Voters in two Croydon wards – Woodside, and Park Hill and Whitgift – will be electing two new councillors on May 2nd following the resignations of Cllr Mike Bonello (Lab, Woodside) and Cllr Jade Appleton (Con, Park Hill and Whitgift).

The Notice of Election for both vacancies has now been published. Nominations close at 4pm on Friday April 5th and a list of candidates will be published shortly after.

Voting for the by-elections will take place on May 2nd when electors all over the capital head to their local polling station for the London Mayoral and Greater London Assembly elections. Electors in Woodside ward, and in Park Hill and Whitgift ward, will be able to vote for their local councillors at the same time. Polling stations will be open from 7am-10pm on 2 May. If you have recently moved home, changed your name or nationality, please check that you are registered and update your details.

Voters in England are now required to show photo ID at a polling station and will not be allowed to vote in the by-elections or the London elections without it. To find out what photo ID is acceptable or to apply for a free voter ID certificate if you don’t have one, visit www.croydon.gov.uk/voterID.

Anyone who wants to vote by post or via nominated proxy vote can now apply online. The deadline to apply for a postal vote for these elections is 5pm Wednesday 17 April. The deadline to apply for a proxy to vote on your behalf is 5pm Wednesday 24 April. If you choose to vote by proxy, your nominated person will need to show their own photo ID to vote at a polling station.

Returning Officer for Croydon council Katherine Kerswell says: “You’ll need to be registered to vote in the Woodside and Park Hill and Whitgift by-elections, as well as in the London elections on May 2nd. “If you are not already registered, please visit our website to find out how – it’s quick and easy.

“The law has changed and now requires us all to show photo ID at polling stations in order to vote. “Please check you’ve got an acceptable form of ID and if you don’t, apply in good time for the free Voter Authority Certificate.

With these being Croydon’s first elections since the changes, please do remind your friends, family and neighbours not to forget their photo ID on May 2nd.”
