Community: Crowdfunding begins for Gipsy Hill village fete… Theatre’s sewing bee is back… and PC Lucy gets a Blue Peter badge!

Gipsy Hill Village Fete 2024

The Gipsy Hill Village Fete 2024 crowdfund is live and rocking!

Fundraising for the Gipsy Hill Village Fete is now underway, with the crowdfund launched by Friends of Gipsy Hill at a sing-along night of rock songs held at Gipsy Hill Brewery, led by Kate Proudlove.

The Gipsy Hill Village Fete is a fun-filled day of community stalls, family activities, delicious local food and drink, live music, traditional straw bales, the much-anticipated Gipsy Hill dog show, and much, much more! This year’s fete will take place on Sunday 14th July.

Hosted on Long Meadow, the fete is Gipsy Hill’s biggest community event, organised by volunteers from Friends of Gipsy Hill and funded thanks to local sponsors, public donations and support from Southwark council. Historically the grazing site for cattle and supported the local dairy on Gipsy Hill, and is the area’s biggest and dedicated remaining meadow.

The crowdfund is now live and there are a variety of ways to support and fund this year’s event, with Gipsy Hill-themed rewards for individual supporters, and sponsorship options at every level for local businesses. Rewards including a beautiful, limited edition A3 print ‘Fanny La Chat’ (the Gipsy Hill Cat) by local artist, made available for the first time as part of the fundraising.

… and PC Lucy gets a Blue Peter badge!

[PC Lucy Underdown on the Blue Peter sofa...with badge]

A Met officer who juggles her day job while holding the title of Britain’s strongest woman has smashed a Guinness World Record on Blue Peter.

PC Lucy Underdown was challenged to carry two presenters on a yoke, weighing more than 200kg, and pull it for 50m in under 90 seconds.

The officer, who polices London’s south east, not only pulled it in approximately 34 seconds, she pulled a car and bagged herself a Blue Peter badge.

Lucy says: “It’s a childhood dream to get a badge. I don’t normally talk about myself so going on Blue Peter was very surreal. I had so much fun.

“I couldn’t make my mind up what I wanted more – the Guinness World Record or the badge, and I was determined to get both! I had so much fun and was so grateful they wanted me to take part.”

PC Underdown’s Guinness World Record attempt aired on Blue Peter on CBBC on Friday February 12th. (Source: Met Police press release)
