Remembering the victims of the London nail bombings… Croydon husband gets minimum 15 years for murdering his wife

Today, 25 years since the London nail bombings, the Met Police remember Andrea Dykes, John Light and Nick Moore who were killed when a bomb exploded inside the Admiral Duncan pub in Soho.

From the Met: We also think of the many others who were seriously injured and traumatised after a hateful extremist deliberately targeted LGBT+, Black and Asian communities in Soho, Brixton and Brick Lane.

Acts of Remembrance events organised by the Hate Crime Awareness Week charity have taken place this month – and candles lit to remember all those affected by the bombings which took place in London in 1999.

A year after the attacks, the Met Police LGBT+ Independent Advisory Group was formed and continues to consult, advise and guide the Met on policing issues and incidents which impact London’s LGBT+ communities.

The Met now have dedicated LGBT+ community liaison officers (CLOs) in every borough whose role is to build strong relations with LGBT+ people who live, work, study, visit and socialise in London.

Hate has no place in London. With the public’s help the Met can deal with those responsible for hate crime, and is ready to help anyone who has been affected by someone else’s prejudice, ignorance or violence. Find out how to spot a hate crime, report it, or get help, support and advice – both online and in your community.

Report anything that doesn’t look or feel right. If you’ve seen or heard something that could potentially be related to terrorism, trust your instincts and report it. Your actions could save lives.

Croydon husband gets minimum 15 years for murdering his wife

A man has been sentenced for murdering his wife following a fatal stabbing in Croydon.

The 24-year-old fromAsh Tree Way, Croydon was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 years’ at Kingston Crown Court on Friday for the murder of his 19-year-old wife Mehak.

He had pleaded guilty to the murder at a previous court hearing in February.

Det Insp Laura Semple of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, says: “This is a tragic case which has completely devastated a family. In killing his wife, he has robbed her family of a loving daughter for reasons known only to himself.

“While I am aware that nothing can bring Mehak back to them, I hope that the sentencing will bring some closure to her loved ones.”

Shortly after 16:15hrs on October 29th 2023, the husband dialled 999 and told the police operator that he had killed his wife at their home on Ash Tree Way.

At the address, officers found Mehak unresponsive. She had suffered catastrophic knife injuries to her neck and despite the efforts of medics at the scene, she was sadly pronounced dead around 20 minutes later.

A post-mortem examination was conducted and found the cause of Mehak’s death was a stab wound to the neck.

A victim impact statement read out to the court from Mehak’s mother said: “The one thing I want more than anything is to have my daughter back but this is not possible.

“No amount of prayers or money or support will bring her back to me. “I am broken. “He hasn’t just murdered Mehak, I feel he has killed me as well.”
