Blocked-off roads diary: Fourth anniversary of Lewisham LTN being “imposed”… Merton council scrap a proposed LTN before it’s even installed – right next to Streatham Vale in Lambeth… Meanwhile, in Devon…

Sadly 4yrs it’ll be next month the LTN was imposed on the residents of red route communities in Lewisham, this remains how it is today. If you live on Brownhill Rd or up to 500M away sadly you are on the wrong side and you aren’t as fortunate. One only has to look at health data.

Joe, an ‘Avid Cyclist’ responding, posted: Brownhill Road has seen traffic like this for many years before LTN’s were implemented… I know this as I’ve lived in #Lewisham my entire life, going on four decades. This is not an LTN problem, it is a lazy / fat motorist problem…

Joe, sadly we’ll have to disagree. These days it’s seven days a week even Sundays at 9am. Before C19 there were peaks; rush hour. Sadly I doubt anyone has studied congestion on Brownhill Road more than me. You’re right there’s always been congestion hence Ella suffered and died horrendously.

Merton council scrap a proposed LTN before it’s even installed – right next to Streatham Vale in Lambeth

A post on Lambeth LTN Watch Facebook reads:

Merton Council abandon a proposed LTN on Longthornton Rd near the Streatham Vale!
~~~
Another LTN bites the dust before it was even installed!
~~~
People seem to be wising up to the negative consequences of LTNs.
~~~
The consultation for this one down at the bottom end of Streatham Vale must have been influenced by the chaos caused by the Streatham Wells LTN as these results show a significant rejection of the proposals from people living both within the LTN and also those living in neighbouring roads:
– 90 per cent rejected the LTN – that was 331 out of 366 valid responses
– 70 per cent of those living inside the proposed LTN rejected it – that was 55 out or 78 people
Sadly, Lambeth council are likely to go ahead with their insane plans despite widespread opposition.
~
Where is the opposition? How many residents opposed??
~
Resident in Woodbourne Avenue voted against a new proposed LTN and Lambeth council are going ahead anyway. Also, people in the surrounding areas of the Streatham Wells LTN were not allowed to vote on the issue. There seems to be a huge swell of support against. Also, I know that most local schools have complained.
Good to find a council that listens.
Meanwhile, in Devon…
Exeter’s low traffic neighbourhood scheme to be scrapped within weeks
Sam Blackledge Reporter, ITV News West Country
Almost 9,000 people responded to a consultation, 82 per cent of whom were opposed to the scheme.
Many people said the LTNs had increased congestion; made journeys longer or more difficult; and impacted carers and disabled people.
But others spoke during the meeting to say it had been a boost for cyclists and walkers and would improve the environment.
Comments in response to the Exeter decision on Lambeth LTN Watch included:
Author: Lambeth headline would be “18 per cent can’t wait for next weeks LTN implementation!!” Haha
Almost 9,000 people responded where more than 80 per cent were against LTNs in Exeter. How many would we need Lambeth wide for the council to have no choice but to remove them all?? The new law now also states that if there isn’t residents’ support for LTNs, the council should listen and remove them.
~
Author: I don’t think it’s a law, so no sanctions that they’d care about. So we would probably need 100 per cent against to get them to listen.
~
Editor’s note: Firstly, if the opinion polls are right, we’re getting a Labour Government.
~
And even if, as suggested above, 100 per cent of people in Lambeth voted against an LTN that still wouldn’t stop Lambeth Labour. As their opening proposals for installing Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in both Slade Gardens, Brixton and Stockwell Gardens off Clapham Road say:
