More Khanage!: 20mph speed limit planned for South Circular

Speed limits of 20 mph are set to be introduced on the South Circular which goes through Tulse Hill.

Details of the move are announced in a Transport for London document which states: “We are seeking your views on the changes before they are introduced.

“We would also like your comments on your experience of the new lower speed limits once the works are complete……..”

The TfL documentation says that “in late 2023, we will begin works to selected roads in Greenwich, Lewisham, Lambeth, Southwark, Wandsworth, Merton, Bromley, Ealing, and Kensington and Chelsea.

Two more maps at Lowering Speed Limits schedule.pdf (367 KB) (pdf) include an outer road going through what appears to be Croydon and Bromley boroughs (page 4/6) and numbered roads – with no guide – listed on 6/6.

The Palace Road SW2 news website says the changes will be introduced in December.

Ridiculous. I drive the stretch Dulwich Common to Croxted Road and the current limit is safe. 20 mph is absurd. It won’t reduce pedestrian risk as there’s little of that anyway. It will increase emissions. I’ll take longer for my journey at 20mph/2000rpm than at 30mph/1800rpm.

Excellent news. Hopefully some enforcement all sides of Tulse Hill gyratory.

Great…… But how will it be enforced?? New cameras?

How ridiculous. More evidence of crippling motorists. These roads are already slow moving as it is. People need to get about and the economy relies on it. Pathetic mayor grinding the city to a halt.

Lowering Speed Limits

The Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) is committed to the Vision Zero Action Plan(External link). The Action Plan sets out our ambition to eliminate death and serious injury from London’s transport network by 2041. It details our plans to reduce road danger, including proposals to implement safer lower speeds on the roads we operate and manage across London.

What are we doing?

We plan to lower the speed limit by 10mph in selected locations across London.

Works have started to introduce a 20mph speed limit on roads in CamdenIslingtonHackneyHaringey and Tower Hamlets.

In late 2023, we will begin works to selected roads in Greenwich, Lewisham, Lambeth, Southwark, Wandsworth, Merton, Bromley, Ealing and Kensington and Chelsea.

By May 2024, we will complete works in Sutton, Hounslow, Hillingdon, Wandsworth, Merton, Richmond, Waltham Forest and Enfield.

We are seeking your views on the changes before they are introduced. We would also like your comments on your experience of the new lower speed limits once the works are complete, and safer speed limits are in operation.

Why do we want to lower speeds?

Collision data from around the world is very clear. It shows the faster a vehicle is travelling the more likely a collision will occur because the driver has less time to react, stop or avoid the collision and the more severe an injury resulting from the collision will be.

What have we done so far?

As of February 2023, we have provided a 20mph speed limit on 110km of the TLRN (Transport for London Road Network) across London. In March 2020, we introduced a 20mph speed limit on all our roads within the central London Congestion Charging Zone, under phase 1 of the programme.

In the next phase of the lowering speed limits programme, by March 2024, we aim to lower the speed limit on a further 140km of TLRN (Transport for London Road Network), including 37 town centre locations to provide safer, more pleasant environments for people to travel within London.

Since 2020, we have reduced speed limits on a further 46km of our roads, under phase 2 of the programme, including those in Westminster, Haringey, Hackney, Enfield, Croydon and Tower Hamlets. Most recently safer speed limits have been introduced on the A205 Upper Richmond Road, Wandsworth and at Gants Hill, Redbridge.

  1. More nonsense from our mayor. He has no mandate and there is no actual evidence that 20mph speed limits, where inflicted, have had any positive effect. If Khan wants to reduce death and injury how about targeting the morons who have no road sense or awareness and think a zebra crossing has a magic force field that will protect them?
