Lambeth HGV ban for Leigham Court Road?

Lambeth council are “considering” a ban on heavy goods vehicles using Leigham Court Road, a main distributor road which runs from opposite Streatham  Hill station to the top of Streatham Common Northside and is part of the 417 bus route.

Lambeth’s ‘solution’ is to redirect the HGVs to “local main roads” which would mean HGVs going down Streatham High Road and then turning left up Streatham Common Northside.

The proposal is buried in a 40-page officers decision report on the Streatham Wells Low Traffic Neighbourhood from August 2023 which reads:

(Paragraph 2.60): The impact of HGVs on Leigham Court Road has been raised by local respondents, including the disproportionate impact of these type of vehicles on air quality and road danger outside of local schools. Whilst Leigham Court Road functions as a distributor road, providing access for loading purposes to several areas of light industry, it can be explored if through HGV traffic can be redirected to local main roads.

2.61 In terms of traffic impact, HGVs make up a minor level of traffic on Leigham Court Road. According toLambeth’s monitoring in November/December 2021, HGVs made up between 0.5-1% of traffic. That being said, HGVs are some of the most impactful, most polluting vehicles and present a relatively highlevel of road danger.
